8 people shot during 4th of July festivities in Minneapolis Park


MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Eight people were injured, some seriously, in a shooting in a Minneapolis park during unofficial Fourth of July celebrations, officials say.

Police said the shooting took place around 11:30 p.m. Monday at Boom Island Park.

“We were just watching fireworks and just heard a whole bunch of gunfire,” Kaayla Laanaee told WCCO-TV. “I just heard them go over my head towards the trees. I ducked right down to the edge of the lake.

First responders converged on the park and police began investigating and laying down evidence markers.

Minneapolis Park Police said there was no official July 4 event or fireworks display at the park, but people gathered there to celebrate the holiday.

Police say no one is in custody. Authorities have not released details of the eight people who were taken to hospital.
