Glen-Ed Pantry’s New Fundraiser Offers Restaurant Tour

The Glen-Ed Food Pantry is hosting a new event on May 14, from 1-4 p.m.

Similar to a pub crawl, the Appetizer Hop fundraiser features different restaurants around Edwardsville. Participants buy a wristband that gives them appetizers and drink specials at the relevant restaurants.

Wristbands can be purchased for $25 on the Glen-Ed Food Pantry website.

Participating restaurants include Wang Gang, Chappy’s, Seoul Sushi, Bella Milano, Doc’s Smokehouse, Blue Violet, Goshen Coffee and 1818 Chophouse.

Upon check-in, attendees receive a tote bag and are eligible for a gift basket that includes various gift certificates and includes a $500 gift certificate to Blue Violet.

The pantry is expecting around 300 people to join the restaurant tour.

“The importance of pantry support is more important now because the dollars don’t go that far,” said Jane Asahay of Glen-Ed Pantry. “We’re seeing more people who need help who haven’t needed it in the past.”

Asahay has been in the pantry for over two years, long before the pandemic began. She said the pantry was essential during the pandemic, but there has recently been an increase in need due to inflation.

“We have more people in the community who need support services,” Asahay said. “The community is what makes this happen and we can’t do it without that support.”

The pantry not only provides food, but also personal hygiene products.

Although someone is unable to provide support at events and fundraisers, the pantry accepts food donations and monetary gifts.

“All of these little things add up and we couldn’t function without them,” Asahay said.

The Appetizer Hop fundraiser kicks off the next few months of pantry events.

August will be the pantry back-to-school collection and distribution to provide school supplies for families, and a 5k Trick or Trot event in October is currently planned.

Mega Fresh Wednesday takes place on the third Wednesday of each month. Ten pallets of food are delivered to the pantry parking lot and distributed to everyone who comes.

The bag sale takes place on the fourth Saturday of each month. For a donation of just $5, people who come can fill a bag with clothing and household items.

“We are honored to be able to provide the services,” Asahay said. “We could not continue this noble mission without the generous support and donations of our community.
