“As the world grapples with many challenges, it is remarkable to see how lighthouses are generating sustainability benefits while achieving business goals, which we call eco-efficiency,” said Francois Betti, Head of Shaping the Future of Advanced Manufacturing and Value Chains, World Economic Forum. “We need them to continue to light the way forward for the global manufacturing community in shaping a responsible manufacturing future that works for people, society and the environment.”

Over the past five years, LG has transformed its factory complex in Changwon, South Korea in LG Smart Park, a futuristic home appliance manufacturing hub. The key elements of the transformation are a digital end-to-end three-dimensional logistics system, an advanced analytics system based on advanced computing technology and machine learning that predicts defects, and state-of-the-art facilities that can mass-produce multiple models to flexibly meet customers’ requirements.

The new “digital twin” technology allows the operating system to analyze production processes in virtual reality. It can predict if any issues will occur in the next 10 minutes and provide exact parts and materials for assembling each device with an accurate and up-to-date status of the facility’s logistics operations. Sensors using deep learning technology are installed throughout the plant to monitor each phase of production in real time, helping plant workers to identify and preemptively resolve any potential issues. As a result, the cost of defective product returns has fallen by 70% between 2020 and 2021, while the overall competitiveness of quality[1] and production efficiency[2] have both been significantly enhanced.

Floors one, two and three of the LG Smart Park use an overhead conveyor system that quickly transports boxes containing refrigerator parts to the required production lines. Attached to each line is a smart warehouse that monitors inventory in real time, enabling automated materials management, including requesting additional parts and supplies.

On the ground, automated guided vehicles (AGVs) leveraging stable 5G network connectivity transport parts and materials to where they are needed on site. With its three-dimensional logistics automation system, the company can reduce the amount of warehouse space required by 30% compared to conventional logistics systems and reduce the time required for hourly transportation of materials by 25%.[1]

LG Smart Park has also adopted the use of robots with an artificial intelligence engine and a camera to make the process of producing home appliances faster and safer. Robots undertake dangerous and complicated tasks, such as welding and lifting heavy parts and equipment.

LG plans to apply the innovative and intelligent production technologies developed at LG Smart Park to a total of 26 LG production facilities in 13 countries, accelerating the digital transformation of its global manufacturing network by 2025.

“LG Smart Park exemplifies our strong commitment to embracing breakthrough technologies as the global market leader in premium home appliances,” said Lyu Jae Cheol, president of LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “We are presenting a blueprint for the future of manufacturing that delivers better environmental, economic and job outcomes.”
