Women’s golf ends its first day at Bruzzy


FORT WORTH, TX – University of Houston Senior Annie-Kim finished The Bruzzy’s opening day with a score of 146 to lead the Cougars and tie for 19and at the Waterchase Golf Club on Monday evenings.

The Seoul native has posted a straight 73 and tied with his senior compatriot Ariana Saenz for Monday’s team honors with six birdies.

As a team, the Cougars recorded a total of 600 teams to stand in 12and. Houston was one of eight teams to complete 36 holes before play was suspended due to darkness.

Saenz tied for 50and at 151 years old, in second year Nicole Abelar and senior Maria Jose Martinez were tied 56and at 152. Second year Delaney Martin tied for 66and at 155.

No. 17 Baylor held on to the day one lead at -20 to have 15 shots ahead of No. 7 Oklahoma State. The No. 30 TCU was third at +3 while Tulane was fourth at +4. No. 46 North Texas (+5), No. 13 Texas (+5), No. 37 Iowa State (+11), Tulsa (+12), No. 49 Oklahoma (+17) and Charlotte (+17) rounded out of the top 10 leaders.

Baylor’s Gurleen Kaur held on the first day after at 8-under 136 to finish two strokes ahead of teammate Addie Baggarly. North Texas’ Audrey Tan was third at 139, while Baylor’s Rosie Belsham was fourth at 140.

The teams will complete the second round on Tuesday morning and the final round will begin immediately after.

This is the Cougars’ final regular season tournament of the year before heading to the American Athletic Conference Championships later this month.

After The Bruzzy, Houston takes its first steps into the playoffs when it competes in the American Athletic Conference Championships, which take place April 17-19 at Pinehurst #6 – Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, North Carolina.

The Cougars will learn their NCAA playoff fate on the draft show, which airs at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, on the Golf Channel.

Seventy-two teams and 12 non-team members will compete at six NCAA regional venues across the country. These sites include Stanford Golf Course (Stanford, CA); Vanderbilt Legends Club (Franklin, Tenn.); The championship course at UNM (Albuquerque, NM); University of Michigan Golf Course (Ann Arbor, Michigan); Karsten Creek Golf Club (Stillwater, Okla.) and Seminole Legacy Golf Club (Tallahassee, Florida).
